Truth be told: I am not a foodie (or a cocktail connoisseur). My eyes don’t beam at the sight of a truffle spread, and my ears don't perk when a bottle of wine is twice my age. I have never gone scrounging for flavor in the way I scrounge for a cashmere sweater or an A-Line dress (my piece, The Perfect White Tee And Where To Find It, is a fine testament to this). When it comes to scanning a drink menu, “ginger” and “lime” are as far as my comprehension goes, because, while I can differentiate merino wool from cotton, lambskin leather from nappa, and satin from silk, the discrepancies between rum, vodka, tequila, and tonic are completely lost on me. In my family, there was room for only one foodie and one fashionista: I got the latter, and my sister, the former. That gal is a savant of the savory, salty, and sweet. A parisian-loving baker who knows when to add a "pinch of this" or a "dash of that" to zhush up any old recipe. Her propensity for due diligence before dining out (in the form of a full-fledged menu, customer reviews, and ambiance audit) is why every restaurant she recommends is well worth trying. So, when we arrived at her Saturday night pick, a “cocktail bar & eatery” tucked away in an unsuspecting Fort Lauderdale plaza, I knew I was in for a special treat.
Dimly lit by the orange bulbs of a few crystal chandeliers, No Man’s Land has the spirit of a lux masquerade ball and the sophisticated mystique of a 007 poker scene. As soon as you’ve snuggled up into one of the velvet booths, say au revoir to your favorite drink & tapas spot before, because you’re a flaming cocktail away from claiming this sleek, private club-adjacent refuge as your new “go-to”. Here, the bartenders are the mixologists we all dream of becoming; a crew of cocktail chemists who shake and stir to perfection. These libations will keep you coming back for more. A crafty concoction of Bourbon, charred peach, lemon & Black Tea is their signature “Georgia on My Mind”. If you’re keen on vim and vigor, “Gypsy’s Tears” is a rum heavy glass pinched with coffee and served en flambé. You’ll want to take a peek at the provisions while you tipple - Oysters on the Half Shell, Truffle Mac & Cheese, and the NML Spinach Artichoke Dish are three small plates that will keep your tapa tummies happy. I'm raising a toast to No Man’s Land, a tasty escape from the ordinary.
